Using wall power can save a fortune in batteries. This transformer runs most 1.5 VDC to 3 VDC at the high end of their design range, providing lots of power with a reasonable motor life.

To connect the motor either snip off the power connector to access the wires or build yourself an adapter using 2.1mm Power Jack, PCB mount.

If you are controller the motor with a microcontroller, the SN754410NE H-Bridge can easily power two motors of this class.

If you are building the circuit on a breadboard the wiring can look like a bowl of spaghetti, but its not that hard and works great. This tutorial provides a wiring map and sample code for use with the Basic Stamp:

Motor Control Using the SN754410 Quad Half H-Bridge IC

You should find it fairly easy to adapt this example to other microcontrollers.

from Solarbotics

The 'Secret' L293D motor driver kit replaces the guts of a standard servo and turns it into a logic-signal controlled gear motor! The SGS Thompson L293D is configured to provide up to 1.2A and 36V - much higher than what a standard servo electronics are designed for!

This kit fits inside a standard servo body, like our SERVO or GM4 clear servo gear motor. The indicator LEDs on the kit also make for a cool lightshow in the clear servo case, or as part of a breadboard-mounted motor driver.

Don't want to drive a servo? We don't blame you! Use the 'Secret' Motor Driver to power any gear motor like our GM2 or GM3! Catalog number: 11940. Brand: Solarbotics. Brand's Part Number: KSMD.

The best way to control motor speed is with pulsed power, but that can get complicated. Wiring this potentiometer in series with the motor gives you reasonable speed control with maximum simplicity. This 5W can dissipate the heat that results from running the motor at low speeds indefinitely.
