Picture of productEasy Microcontrol'n v4.1
from Tinkering Supplies
Author: David Benson

"Easy Microcontrol'n" is intended to ease the beginner toward understanding and application of the PIC line of microcontrollers from Microchip Technology, Inc. Examples of assembly language programs range from a simple one to turn on LED's to more complex ones for timing and for event-counting. Writing programs is covered in-depth and the use of flow charts, as an aid to visualizing what a program does, is emphasized. The approach is hands-on with many examples, all of which may be demonstrated using a very simple demo board (a project) in the beginning of the book.

Picture of productMicrocontrol'n Apps
from Tinkering Supplies
Author: David Benson

"Microcontrol'n Apps" is an intermediate level applications guide covering Microchip Technology's PIC Microcontrollers. Serial communication as a means of transferring data between PIC microcontrollers and peripheral chips and also between two or more PIC microcontrollers is described. Use of the 93C46 serial EEPROM is detailed as an example. Since we live in an analog world, A/D and D/A are discussed with several methods illustrated for each. Conditioning signals from sensors with an analog voltage output is described. Interfacing PIC microcontroller-controlled systems with humans requires some math, binary to decimal conversion and vice versa, alphanumeric LCD interfacing and scanning keypads. Single wire serial communication with a PIC-controlled LCD module which can be built by the reader is included. A digital thermometer project brings these topics together as an example. The book also explains how to establish serial communication between a PIC microcontroller and a PC via a RS-232 conversion circuit and a terminal program. These techniques are used in a digital voltmeter/data logger experiment for uploading data to a PC for display plus graphing using a spreadsheet program. Moving up or down from the now familiar PIC16F84 to other devices is covered in detail so that you will easily be able to work with the new devices being introduced by Microchip. Finally, use of the Microchip in-circuit debugger (ICD) is described. "Microcontrol'n Apps" gives the reader the tools to design, build, and debug intermediate level microcontroller-based instrumentation and systems. Catalog number: 17822. Brand: Tinkering Supplies.  PIC Microcontroller Project Book Second Edition
Author: John Iovine

The PIC microcontroller is enormously popular both in the U.S. and abroad. The first edition of this book was a tremendous success because of that. However, in the 4 years that have passed since the book was first published, the electronics hobbyist market has become more sophisticated. Many users of the PIC are now comfortable shelling out the $100). This new edition is fully updated and revised to include detailed directions on using both versions of the microcontroller, with no-nonsense recommendations on which is better served in different situations.  Programming and Customizing the 8051 Microcontroller
Author: Myke Predko

Ready-to-build 8051 microcontroller projects--at your fingertips. Probably the most successful microcontroller on the market today, Intel's legendary 8051 lives on in enhanced versions sold by more than 20 chip manufacturers. Packed with over 30 experiments using Dallas Semiconductor's "HSM" flavors of the 8051 plus the Atmel AT89Cx051 "Flash" based versions, Myke Predko's Programming and Customizing the 8051 Microcontroller puts you in control of the 8051's architecture and instruction set--and even supplies a baker's dozen of ready-to-build example applications, programs and circuits. (You'll see how to create an Atmel AT89Cx061 programmer...a device emulator that exploits the 8051's ability to access external memory...a robot based on the Tamiya "Wall Hugging Mouse"--complete with a TV remote control interface...two real-time 8051 operating systems...and many other exciting projects). Best of all, the included CD-ROM supplies source code for the book's experiments and applications, a demonstration cop of the "UMPS" integrated development environment (IDE), and data sheets for the Dallas Semiconductor and Atmel 8051 compatible devices. Picture of productProgramming the SX Microcontroller: A Complete Guide
from Parallax
Author: Gunther Daubach

If you're ready to learn assembly language programming and the SX architecture, this is the book. The book begins with a step-by-step tutorial demonstrating the Parallax SX-Key software and programming tool. This covers the SX-Key debugger, registers/code windows while developing timing-based programs. The following chapters of the book provide detailed explanations of architecture including register use, memory configuration, interrupts and stack management. Short program examples are used to demonstrate arithmetic and logic instructions, Virtual Peripherals and UARTs. Applications examples in the second half of the book include function generators, pulse width modulation, analog to digital conversion, reading keypads, controlling LED displays, serial bus communication, and programming the SX Tech Bot. Picture of productSerial Communications
from Tinkering Supplies
Author: Roger L. Stevens

"Serial Communications is a comprehensive advanced level book which details various methods for implementing serial communications between a Microchip PIC microcontroller and an external device. Asynchronous serial communications is covered both by using an on-chip USART and by bit-bang methods. The RS-232 standard is explained. A discussion of synchronous serial communications includes the I2C (Philips Semiconductors), SPI (Motorola) and Microwire (National Semiconductor) protocols. The Dallas Semiconductor 1-Wire bus is described. Many code examples are included as modules which will provide the basis for the reader's own PIC microcontroller applications. Catalog number: 17848. Picture of productTime'n and Count'n
from Tinkering Supplies
Author: David Benson

"Time'n and Count'n" is an intermediate level book on 16-bit timing and counting applications using Microchip Technology's PIC microcontrollers. More opportunities for creating fun projects are described. Learning to use timer 1 (TMR1) with it's powerful capture, compare and pulse width modulation (PWM) modes will expand your PIC microcontroller design capabilities significantly. TMR1, which is an on-board feature of many of the mid-range PIC microcontrollers, is a 16-bit timer/counter. The maximum count is 65,535 vs. 255 for timer 0 (TMR0). This is a big help! TMR1 used in conjunction with the capture, compare, PWM (CCP) module may be programmed to do useful things unattended leaving the PIC free to perform other tasks. A special pin may be used for external inputs to TMR1 and another special pin may be used as an external output from TMR1. The techniques presented in the book are useful for generating single time intervals and free running outputs as well as for measuring period and frequency. PWM using TMR1 unattended is also described. These timing and counting techniques serve as the basis for designing and building your own period and frequency generating and measuring test equipment as described in the book. Catalog number: 17830. Brand: Tinkering Supplies. Brand's Part Number: H01783-01T. 218 pages.
