 | 123 Robotics Experiments for the Evil Genius Author: Myke Predko
This book provides an amazingly comprehensive education in robotics in a relatively short number of pages. The book is organized into 123 experiments that cover almost every aspect of hobby robotics including mechanics, electronics and microcontroller programming using the Parallax Basic Stamp. Each experiment is 1-3 pages long including a tutorial and a lab experiment involving construction of a device or circuit and exercices exploring its operation and use.
The book takes a very practical, hands-on approach to its subjects. Only a handful of pages include any math and that doesn't get any more complex than middle school pre-algebra. The book is very readable but very dense. If you read it cover to cover you will have been exposed to almost all the skills and components used in hobby robotics. If you work your way through all the experiments you will create several simple robots and will develop an comprehensive working knowledge of robotics. The material in this book will be challenging for most adults but can be handled by motivated high school students. Manufacturer: TAB. Manufacturer's Part Number: 0-07-141358-8. 355 pages. | | Extreme MINDSTORMS: An Advanced Guide to LEGO MINDSTORMS Author: Dave Baum, Michael Gasperi, Ralph Hempel, and Luis Villa
Three MINDSTORMS experts have joined with the maintainer of the legOS HOWTO to produce the book that all advanced users of LEGO MINDSTORMS have been waiting for. Each author has written material based on his specialty. Dave Baum shows you how to take NQC to its limits. Ralph Hempel explains the ins and outs of pbForth. Michael Gasperi teaches you how to build numerous custom sensors with simple, systematic instructions. Luis Villa show you how (and when) to upgrade MINDSTORMS' built-in operating system to take advantage of the extra power of legOS, a complete C environment for the RCX.
Extreme MINDSTORMS: An Advanced Guide to LEGO MINDSTORMS starts with an overview of the RCX firmware and includes a whole chapter on the new RCX 2.0 firmware. Next, the book concentrates on the steps needed to build Seeker, a Light-Seeking Robot, and to program it in NQC. Later chapters extend Seeker's functionality using pbForth and legOS. For readers of
Robot Building for Beginners, or any novice ready for the "next level" in robotics, welcome to your next great read! Intermediate Robot Building offers the kind of real-world knowledge that only an experienced robot builder can offer the kind of knowledge beginners usually have to learn through mistakes. In this book, you'll learn the value of a robot heartbeat and the purpose of the wavy lines in photocells. You'll find out what electronic part you should sand. You'll discover how a well-placed switch can help a robot avoid obstacles better than a pair of feelers. And you'll avoid mistakes that can cause a capacitor to explode.
Want a robot that can explore rooms, follow lines, or battle opponents in mini-sumo? This book presents step-by-step instructions and circuit and part descriptions so that you can build the robot featured in the book or apply the modules to your own robot designs.
Finally, you'll find the complete schematics for Roundabout, a room explorer that requires no programming and uses only off-the-shelf electronics. With Roundabout, you'll use many of the same techniques used by professional robotics engineersand you'll experience many of the same challenges and joys they feel when a robot "comes to life."
