Gifts for Students Up To Age 8 (Up to Grade 3) Section
Young kids use basic building sets to help them develop hand-eye coordination, develop fine motor skills and begin to learn that ideas can be turned into real physical objects. Generally you don't want to give them too many shapes or pieces until they are ready to manage them. Expect young kids to need lots of help following the plan books. Remember how many times you repeated the ABC song with your child? Expect to spend amount of time learning how to follow plans. Its worth the effort. Many building skills seem to be like language skills, if you learn them when you are young they become a natural part of your though processes. After a certain age they become "foreign" thoughts and harder to learn. When kids are building on their own let them be creative and a little silly. When using crayons to draw they sometimes need to stay within the lines and they sometimes need to scribble. The same applies to building. Encourage them to be serious and thoughtful when they are working from plans -- from either the plan book or their own imagination -- and silly and creative when they are just exploring the building material or playing.
