  • Currently attending college part-time working toward a M.S. Engineering (GPA 3.8 -- not bad for an old man!)
  • Microsoft Certified Professional, 1994
  • M.B.A. Telecommunications Management, Golden Gate University, 1983
  • B.S. Information Science, Golden Gate University, 1981
  • Certified Data Processor (CDP), ICCP, 1978
  • Certified Computer Programmer - Business, ICCP, 1977

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

One Ring Communications Inc., March 2000 to December 2000

Chief Technology Officer (CTO) developing a prototype Unified Messaging System (UMS) integrating E-Mail, Voice Mail and Fax technologies. The WEB, E-Mail and database components were developed using Python on a LINUX platform with the Apache WEB server and SENDMAIL Message Transfer Agent (MTA). The Voice components were developed using Delphi on an NT platform using Dialogic T1/PRI and FAX hardware and Dectalk Text-To-Speech (TTS). The LINUX and NT servers communicated via a TCP protocol that I implemented with cross-platform Python. Identical Python code ran on both platforms except for a thin COM wrapper on the NT side of the conversation. I developed the application to an early beta stage that was being used by the founders and a handful of associates for routine work. Development was suspended due to deteriorating financial market conditions that prevented us from obtaining funding for deployment and test marketing.

The Software Engineering Store, 1987 to present

In 1987 I founded the Software Engineering Store, later incorporated as Biznode Inc., as a local resource for software developers. Responding to the changing needs of the San Francisco business community, the business has evolved into a resource for business professionals, providing a full range of networks, computers, software and support services for small to medium sized professional businesses.

I now provide cradle-to-grave technology planning and support for small to mid-sized busineses including LAN infrastructure, workstation support, NT and LINUX servers, Internet gateways, WEB and E-Mail hosting and PBX and Centrex telephone systems. I have personally performed and supervised many network installations including planning, pulling cable, assembling computers, writing programs and, most importantly, making the systems work performing real business applications. For small businesses I perform these functions personally with a small team of loosely associated consultants available to assist with overflow and vacation coverage. For larger clients I provide planning, training of in-house staff and implementation of technical projects that exceed the capabilities of in-house staff.

Pacific Telephone, 1976 - 1977, 1979 - 1987

Staff Analyst and Staff Manager in a variety of positions including contract management, application development, micro computer support, data security and data planning.

Beginning in 1979, I wrote a series of white papers encouraging the company to establish an organization to manage and support the introduction of micro computer technology. I was eventually given approval to establish one of the first corporate micro computer support groups in the country. By the time I left the group, it had grown into an organization of over 30 people responsible for standards, systems integration, repair and telephone technical support.

I left the micro computer support group to accept a short term assignment developing the company's first comprehensive data security plan. I was responsible for researching the field, educating the information systems technical staffs and senior management concerning data security issues, working with computer operations, data communications and information planning staffs to create a framework for security planning and implementation, coordinating and partially programming a token based terminal security trial, and assisting information systems management in obtaining corporate support and funding to improve data security.

American Information Development, 1977 - 1979

Director of Application Development and Customer Service for insurance agency accounting systems. Responsible for system design, programming and supervision of a staff of 10.

Wells Fargo Bank, 1971 - 1976

Responsible for design and programming of banking and credit card applications in RPG II, COBOL, FORTRAN and a variety of specialized assembly languages. Areas of specialization included optical character recognition (OCR), real-time programming of check sorting equipment, and application conversion from card based RPG II environment to COBOL tape/disk environment. Progressed from a clerical position to programming supervisor in mini/micro department with responsibility for programmers and three shifts of operations technical support staff.
